Tenor Joshua Guerrero, who is well-known to Coachella Valley residents, joined Plácido Domingo in An Evening of Zarzuela & Latin American Music on Friday, June 7.  Joshua has appeared in numerous Opera Guild programs and was one of the headliners in the April 7 Opera in the Park in Palm Springs.  In addition, he is a first-year member of the Domingo-Thornton Young Artists Program.  According to several attendees he was an enormous success and was received with enthusiastic ovations.  Reviewer Joe Banno wrote in the LA  Times, “Most striking of all were tenor Joshua Guerrero, with a voice marrying sweetly lyrical timbre, impressive heft and ringing high notes, and Janai Brugger, whose supple and luminous soprano delivered one gloriously floated high note after another.”  The Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert is proud of both young singers but especially proud of our beloved Joshua to whom we send our very best wishes for continued success.

The Cinémas Palme d’Or in Palm Desert, a Media Partner of the Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert, presents an ambitious program of operas from some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world.  These beautifully produced performances are screened in their original language with English subtitles.  The theater is generously donating a portion of every ticket sold to the Palm Springs Opera Guild.

Thanks to the generosity of Yvonne and Steven Maloney, the Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert recently held its end of season party at the impressive Smoke Tree Ranch.  The weather was perfect and nearly 100 members enjoyed drinks, a buffet and a concert of vocal and violin music performed by the incredibly talented Lucine Zyrekyants, accompanied by valley celebrity Gale Enger.  Members re-elected Terry Hendrix to another term as President and Bruce Johansen First Vice President and Michael Cressey Second Vice President.

Singers may now register for the 2013 Vocal Competition sponsored by the Palm Springs Opera Guild of the Desert.  Application fee is $35.  The Competition, to be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the Rancho Mirage Public Library, is open to young men and women between the ages of 18 and 32 as of December 6, 2013 residing in the western United States. This year will mark the Competition’s 30th anniversary.  Enrollees will be asked to prepare 4 arias, one of which must be in a foreign language.  The event allows young singers to earn valuable experience, cash scholarships, community recognition of their achievements and the opportunity to advance their careers.  For more information about this program and a list of recent previous winners please click here.
